Fun Activities!

Activity 1 : Make Your Own Fish Finder

  • Cut off the top of a 2L pop bottle
  • Put small amounts of bread or dogfood in the open bottle
  • Push the spout into the bottle tightly
  • Poke small holes in the bottle
  • Attach a long piece of string to the bottle and attach a label with your name and phone number as required by Ontario Fishing Regulations
  • Leave overnight

Note: Try putting your trap in different areas (weedy, sandy, rocky, etc.). You should catch different kinds of minnows, small fishes and other living things in different habitats. Where do you catch more? Why? Also, try comparing an area you are rehabilitating to other areas within your shoreline. Habitat can be used by different species during the day and at night.

    Activity 2 : Underwater Viewer

  • Remove the bottom from a container eg. coffee can or yogurt container
  • Attach plastic wrap to one of the open ends tightly, using a plastic band
  • Tape off end to protect hands

Note : Use your underwater viewer to study different types of habitat. Be sure to stand still and be quiet. What do you see in areas with weeds? What do you see in rocky areas? What about sandy areas? Look at tree stumps and branches underwater. Can you see differences between these habitat types?

    Activity 3: Storm Watch

Stretch a piece of mesh along your shoreline, anchoring it in with posts. Make sure the holes in the mesh are not too large. Wait for a rain storm! After the storm, go down to your shoreline and see what is in the mesh. Remember that any chemicals you use in your cottage or outside it ultimately end up in the water! you'll be amazed by what you you'll find!

    Activity 4: Nylon Net

Get a piece of nylon stockings from the knee down. Bend an old coat hanger into a ring and attach the nylon stocking (staple it). Run your net through the water and see what you catch. Try it at night and you may catch more zooplankton (fish food)!
