School Council ---- FAQ
What exactly is a School Council
anyway?
School Councils are advisory bodies comprised of elected
parents, community representatives, teaching and non-teaching
employees, students and the school Principal. Through the active
participation of parents, school councils work to improve
student achievement and enhance the accountability of the
education system to parents. School Council may provide advice
to the school Principal and the school Board in a variety of
areas, including curriculum goals, school action plans, student
codes of behavior and communication strategies. Elections to
become Council members take place in the first 30 days of each
school year. Every elementary and secondary school in Ontario is
required to operate a School Council. Further information
about School Councils can be obtained from:

What goes on at Council
meetings?
Each meeting is run by the acting Chairperson according to an
agenda. Topics discussed are varied and relate to our school and
to the education of our children. The Principal presents his
report to the Council on school affairs. The Student Activity
Rep. presents a report on the activities of the student body.
Often an invited Guest Speaker will address the Council. The
Council will consider any new business raised within its
mandate.
When and where are Council
meetings? Can anyone attend?
Future School Council Meeting Dates are usually the first
Tuesday evening of every other month - September, November,
January, April & June. Meetings are held in the Seminar
Room (near the Library) at HHSS and start at 7:00 pm. Each
meeting runs for no more than two hours. Everyone is welcome as
all meetings are open. Refreshments are served.
