This site has been
designed to facilitate communication between the students of
Watt Public School in Ullswater, Ontario, Canada, and their
pen-pals in Belgium and France, as part of their Core French
program. In our links, Watt students present information
about themselves, and present what they have learned about
their pen-pals via the foreign schools' websites, e-mails,
and letters received from abroad. This is an opportunity for
students to improve their French and to learn about the
cultures of French-speaking regions. Watt Students wrote about
their pen-pals, their country, and themselves in French.

(Katy Bell, Core
French
Teacher grades four
to eight) The Assignment, In
Mallorie's words Our project started out as just
writing small letters to our pen-pals in France. After a
while, Mademoiselle Bell came up with the idea to make a
website on our pen-pals and our school. While still writing
to our pen-pals, we started the website. This became one of
our major projects. We started to make rough drafts of
things such as: what we learned, and what we are learning
from our pen-pals. Then we began to type them. After we
finished typing them Mademoiselle Bell would copy and paste
the entries etc. onto the website. After we finished that,
"C'est complète!" Students' Reflections
On Their Pen-pal and Website Projects The assignment was good because we
learned how to write in French. The assignment was hard
because it was hard to write it in French. I had to use a
dictionary. - Andrew, grade six My pen- pal is Cecil she lives in
the south of France and she has a dog named Stinky. And when
she writes to me she sends me lots of pictures, and one
picture she sent me was a witch and it was cool. And she
sent me a picture of her dog. And she likes the colours
blue, green, and purple. Also she sent me a picture of her
best friend. Also her best friend is my friend's pen- pal.
And when she sends me letters I learn more stuff about them.
And when we send them letters about us they learn stuff
about us. And so both of us learn about each other. And I
think it's good that we have pen-pals because if we didn't
have pen-pals, we wouldn't be able to know what they like or
what their name is. - Melissa M., grade six Je n'ai pas aimé le projet
parce que c'était trop facile. C'est facile parce que
je suis très bien dans la classe de français.
J'aime le projet parce que c'est amusant et j'aime
répondre à de petites questions. - Mallorie,
grade seven The assignment was good because we
got to say what we have learned about our penpals. We also
got to finish the sentences the way we wanted. I also got to
e-mail mine from home. - Danielle, grade six I think that the assignment was
good, to put it on the web site, so then the pen pals can
see the information faster. -Dylan, grade six I think (this project) was fun
because the whole world can see it on the internet. - Liam,
grade six I think that some of this project
was fun and some of it difficult. The fun part was we got to
communicate with kids the same age and grade but they live
half way around the world! Our pen-pals sent us very unique
letters, but the down part on this was they wrote in French.
The only difficult thing was we had to write in French (full
letters) but I got used to it. - Frances, grade
six It was easy to type and we got a
sheet to put our information on. - Zach, grade
six I think this website is cool
because our pen-pals can look at it and learn more about us.
I think having pen-pals is awesome because we can learn more
about French people. - Jonny, grade 4/5 I had to have Mademoiselle edit it
(my work) but I had most of it right. - Bromley, grade
8 I really enjoyed doing this French
assignment. It is another good way to communicate with
pen-pals instead of writing a letter. - Stefan, grade
7 I think the pen-pal system we have
is very interesting because we have a chance to see what
life in a different culture is like. - Dustin, gr.
7 What I liked about this assignment
is I got to write more stuff in French and that will
help me more in French. What I didn't like is that I had to
wait a long time for a computer. Overall, it was challenging
and fun!! - Jenna, gr.7
